WIP Wednesday
Featuring: Jonathan and the mortifying ordeal of enjoying your Baby Boomer parents’ music!
From Tonight, Tonight, The Highway’s Bright:
“What’s on this?” the front-desk lady asked, frowning at the cassette tape. “You know we listen to these backwards, too.”
She squinted up at Jonathan, who was suddenly very aware of the hollows under his eyes and the cooking-oil smell that he felt sure still clung to his hair. He’d made an effort, washing his face and hands in the bathroom at Drummond’s and swapping his T-shirt for a navy sweater with yellow stripes, but there’d been no time to go back to the apartment and shower, let alone take a nap. Another old-house nightmare had broken up his sleep last night.
“It’s folk, mostly,” he said, attempting to sound meek instead of annoyed. He had long shifts and bad dreams; that didn’t mean that he was trying to send Satanic messages to his sick mother. “It’s nice. Soothing.”
He’d listened to the tape himself on the drive down to Pennhurst. It was full of stuff from the sixties: Bob Dylan, Simon and Garfunkel, Joan Baez, Tom Paxton, Peter Sarstedt, the Everly Brothers after they’d started making weird concept albums instead of chipper malt-shop pop. It wasn’t his usual style at all. He preferred more concise lyrics, and all the acoustic strumming just made him sleepy. Yet listening to “Farewell, Angelina” and “Shady Grove” while surrounded by the ghosts of Mom’s Camels had an almost hypnotizing effect, making the worries of the day seem less sharp and pressing. Maybe the tape would do the same for her.
The front-desk lady—Dolores, according to her badge—didn’t respond, just turned the tape over in her thin, knobby hands. It occurred to him that Joan Baez might be as offensive to her as Iron Maiden or the Sex Pistols. She was the right age to have been scandalized by Elvis (or, he thought uncharitably, Scott Joplin). He wondered if she (or the mysterious “we” she’d mentioned) would deem the lyrics too disturbing for a schizophrenic person. He thought of the pirates in “Farewell, Angelina,” shooting tin cans with a sawed-off shotgun while the neighbors cheered and clapped. He loved those lyrics; they reminded him of the people of Hawkins, cheerfully turning out for the spectacle of his family’s destruction. Joan Baez—or, rather, Bob Dylan, who’d written the song—had probably had something completely different in mind, but he didn’t care. He’d take vindication where he could find it.
From Tomorrow’s a Long Way Off (warning for allusions to domestic violence, plus Lonnie saying a bunch of gross inappropriate sexist shit, including about Joyce, below the cut):
“You gotta let these girls know where things stand, right at the start,” Lonnie said, turning the key in the ignition. The stereo started playing The Rolling Stones. “You can’t let them walk all over you. Give an inch, and they’ll take a mile.”
Yeah, thought Jonathan, they might start thinking that you shouldn’t call them crazy bitches and throw things at them.
“Mind if I turn this up?” he asked, gesturing at the stereo. “I like this song.”
“Sure,” Lonnie said. He pulled out of the parking space and started down Main Street. “What was that one you liked when you were little? You used to kind of bob up and down to it. God, you were funny.”
“Street Fighting Man,” said Jonathan.
Despite himself, he smiled. He could remember crouching in front of the record player on the shag carpet, trying to get closer to the music and its strange, rollicking beat. Lonnie saying hey, Joyce, the kid’s got taste. His mom beaming, hugely pregnant with Will and wearing some long hippie dress with orange flowers.
“Yeah, that’s it.” Lonnie was also smiling. It made him look older, nicer. Then he sighed. “It was easier when I was a kid, you know. Even girls thought women’s lib was a joke. Course, they still wanted their own way, but…”
He trailed off and drummed on the steering wheel. But you’ll never break, never break, never break, went the stereo. Jonathan stayed quiet.
“Well, I don’t know,” Lonnie continued. “I guess we got nothing to complain about. Back then, good girls didn’t give it up. Hell, most bad girls didn’t go all the way. Hey, you wanna know which one your mom was?”
Jonathan’s mouth went dry.
“No,” he snapped. “Why would I want to know that?”
Lonnie just laughed.
“Lighten up, kid. It was just a joke.”
Jonathan didn’t reply. Joke or not, it had been a gross thing to say. He looked out the window, watching the buildings get sparser. They were almost at the edge of town.
“You don’t know how good you have it,” Lonnie continued, apparently unbothered. “None of it means anything now.”

HE WILL REMEMBER THIS MOMENT: this slant of light, the faint smell of lemon pastries wafting across the house, a distant grumbling of voices from their family downstairs, michael hutchence's gritty vocals calling all nations to sing to the rhythm of a catchy guitar riff. his father sitting next to him on the floor of his childhood bedroom, indulging him in a story he wishes were longer. a warmth in his chest. a lump in his throat. moments like this were just a myth. like the top of the everest or a man on the moon.
he chuckles softly, bowing his head. pushes himself back against the edge of the bed, pulls his knees closer. "he seems like the kind of guy who'd go hard," he says, amused and simultaneously envious of the weissberg twins' close relationship. he'd never had that, not with a brother or a sister. not with somebody who shares the same forgotten trauma of going through the same birth canal before there was ever light in your eyes and and to live to tell the tale. no fighting over the remote, no pointing fingers at the scene of a broken family heirloom or mud tracks on the kitchen floor, no red-faced, snotty-nosed holiday candids stuck to the refrigerator door, no blanket forts over broken hearts or stubborn promises of growing old together or never growing up at all.
micah weissberg was the only person in the world.
"gideon showed me this picture of you and uncle levi in simon and garfunkel-inspired halloween costumes once, when we were in college. said he wanted to do the same thing at this, like, campus halloween party. wasn't sure if he wanted to go as simon and garfunkel or the weissberg twins dressed up as simon and garfunkel. i think he just wanted an excuse to show me that photo. you guys were little. i don't think you even had your bar mitzvahs yet." having lived in a lowenstein household, micah had mostly only seen photos of his mother and uncles when they were younger. glimpses into saul weissberg's childhood were rare, though he often wondered if it shared any similarity to his, if his father felt the same feelings he did, had liked the same stuff. perhaps, as a way of preempting those answers, he'd taken it upon himself to take an interest in the things he already knew he did. maybe then they'd have something to talk about, even if it takes twenty summers later and his heart broken a thousand times.
"was it your dad who liked simon and garfunkel?"
they never talk about his father's father. most of the time, it takes micah a second to even recall his name before he remembers that his cousin had been named after him. he wonders if his father had ever thought of it for his son, if only micah was born a couple of days earlier, though he concedes that his cousin fits the name better than he ever could. alas, he was named after lanky-limbed plant grazers who get shotgunned for sport or preyed on by lions and wolves and bears. sharp claws and even sharper teeth. the gideons of the world.
“hm,” saul hummed in response, shoving his hands into the pockets of his pants. his son’s current outfit wasn’t up to edna perlmutter weissberg’s standards, but he was just happy micah looked presentable—not out of embarrassment, but out of relief that he didn’t have to fight with micah to put on something else. he knew better. if there was something that micah didn’t want to do, he wouldn’t do it, and any pleas from saul would be met with further obstinance. if there was anything saul knew—as a lawyer and as a father—it was when to pick his battles. his mother may have something different to say, but micah would hear no further word against it from saul.
he had been looking around the room when micah informed him of what album he had been listening to. kick had been part of the soundtrack to his junior year in high school, and he didn’t want to tell micah about how many times he cried while listening to never tear us apart back then, thinking about his confusing feelings for his friend aharon. he smiled softly down at his son. “it’s their best album.” his surprise was brief on his face when micah offered the other earphone, and it took less than a moment for saul to kneel down next to micah on the floor, his knees cracking in protest.
at his question, saul shrugged. “we both appreciated rock—this was before nirvana and the whole grunge scene, y’know—but levi was more into metal than i was. i listened to all sorts of stuff, like inxs and madonna and prince, just based on my mood and where i was at the time. i didn’t really limit myself to just one genre, but uncle levi was a pretty staunch rock-only guy. he got mad at me once because i said if i wanted to listen to nerds rant about swords and princesses, i’d just go to the local dungeons & dragons meetup instead of an iron maiden concert. he wouldn’t talk to me for a whole weekend.” saul laughed at the memory, though it had been a big deal when it happened in 1985. he supposed that was just the nature of brothers, especially twins—constantly pissing each other off, then acting like nothing happened five minutes later. micah didn’t have that experience, and saul mourned that, but not as much as he would have mourned failing a second child.

Lemon Demon - Bad Idea ♫ (fixed version w/ MP3) by AlbinoBlackSheep
Okay, going REALLY retro with this one -- I don’t remember when I first saw this video, but I seem to recall it was on the original AlbinoBlackSheep sight, and it was probably not that long after it came out. And given it was made for Halloween 2006. . . Anyway, I’ve always liked this song and the resultant music video, and when I stumbled upon it again in my likes while looking for Halloweeny music this year, I figured I might as well share the fun with all of you! It features a zombie apocalypse, so there’s some gore, but it’s all of the cartoony kind, so hopefully it’s not too bad. A bit of flashing from lightning too -- I’ll tag appropriately!
#song saturday#lemon demon#bad idea#albinoblacksheep#flashing#cartoony gore#zombies#violence#(against zombies)#(and by zombies)#but yeah this is a fun music video#fun fact back in my days of seriously RPing on LiveJournal#I actually had a journal for this guy#called flightattendantguy or similar#(since the same character was in the 'I've Got Some Falling To Do' video)#I named him Simon Garfunkel#made him the older brother of the guy in the 'Geeks In Love' video#dude was a badass with his shotgun and whatnot#but he never did find his car#queued

In The Future..
Pairing: Hughie Campbell x Reader Wordcount: 1.1K words Summary: Taking a road trip with the team and you’re left alone with Hughie its very nice <3 A/N: School is exhausting but finally got this done! have another Hughie thing in the works but it is VERY catered to me but hope people will enjoy it anyway
You’ve been on the road with the team for the past 4 hours on the way to some mission location. Members of the team have been regularly switching from driving to sitting in the back of the van. First it was Frenchie driving and Kimiko beside him, currently it's Hughie driving with you riding shotgun. Your last stop was 2 hours ago.
There's music on the radio playing quietly. It's a Simon and Garfunkel song you kind of know the lyrics to, so you half sing along at a quiet volume. Hughie is tapping his finger on the steering wheel to the beat, singing almost all of the words under his breath . The highway is quiet, you only see a car pass by every couple of minutes.
You and Hughie haven’t talked much in the past couple of hours, Which is fair because both of you are exhausted but also if it was this much silence with anyone else on the team it would be awkward but with Hughie it's okay. It’s a nice comfortable silence that feels alright even if it should be awkward.
You look behind, to the back of the truck. You see Kimiko and Frenchie cuddled up together, M.M. asleep in the corner and Butcher asleep, snoring with his arms crossed.
“God it’s weird to see butcher asleep, he's like a big weird bear.” You say to Hughie.
In general it’s weird to be with the team and for there to be silence. Most days it’s a lot of shouting and fighting so the quiet is both off putting and refreshing.
“Yeah i'm afraid if i try to wake him up he’ll bite my arm off” both of you chuckle, hoping that Butcher doesn’t suddenly wake up, hear you making fun of him then kill both of you.
“How far away are we from the next stop? My legs are completely stiff” you say, stretching your arms out.
“I think like 300 miles?” Hughie says, looking at the gps. You let out a deep groan and Hughie laughs.
You both go quiet again for another 10 or 20 minutes. You look out the window at the sunset, it paints the sky in a beautiful orange and pink. You pass by a billboard of Homelander that says “Drive safe!”. You roll your eyes.
“Do you think homelander can drive?” you say breaking the silence
“What?”
“Like do you think he can actually drive or has he never had to learn?”
“Uh well he can fly so i don't think he would need a car. He probably gets driven around everywhere too right?”
“Yeah that's true…………….. I’m really bored.”
“Yeah I can tell!” Hughie chuckles.
You look back out at the sunset. “The sky is so pretty out here, it almost makes me wish I didn't live in the city..”
“You’re also-.” hughie cuts himself off mid sentence “Do you think you’ll move out of town when this is all done?”
“It feels like there's never going to be an end to all of this… but yeah maybe I would if i had someone with me I might. What about you? Do you think you’ll ever leave the city?”
“Same as you, if i had someone with me i would.”
“It's settled then, we’ll move out of the city together and become farmers.”
Hughie chuckles in response.
You let out a yawn.
“Are you gonna go to sleep?” Hughie asks.
“No, no I'm fine.”
“You are definitely going to fall asleep.”
“Fuck you, im really fine!”
You really are tired though and more than anything you're completely relaxed. The combination of the feeling of the warmth of the light from the sunset and hughie humming to the tune on the radio sends you into a complete state of relaxation. You feel your eyes become heavy and the music on the radio starts to fade out in your mind…
Hughie notices you falling asleep and turns down the volume dial. He turns over to look at you asleep when he can. He thinks you’re so fucking pretty when you’re asleep.
….
When you wake up it's about 10pm, it's dark outside, the van has stopped outside of a gas station and Hughie is gone but his jacket is laid over you.
When you get out of the van your legs are completely stiff. You stretch your legs and go looking for Hughie.
You see Hughie sitting on the curb drinking a red bull.
“Hey!” You call out
He turns around and gives you a wave. He looks pretty tired.
You sit down next to him, as close as your weird pseudo-platonic relationship allows.
“Never thought of you as a curb sitter.”
“What does that mean?”
“Like a rebel or a delinquent… I don't know, I just woke up, I'm not thinking.”
“Yeah you were out for like a good 3 hours.”
You both look up at the sky. The sky is a lot clearer than in New York, you can see the stars.
“I saw that you put your jacket on me when I was asleep… thank you..” you say coyly..
Hughie shortcuts “It's uh fine! I thought you might be a bit cold so.” You look at his face illuminated by the lights of the gas station behind you. He’s blushing really heavily. “I won’t do it again if it makes you uncomfortable.”
He keeps rambling and you think fuck it. You kiss him.
It is rushed and not what you expected from a first kiss with hughie but its … it's very nice. Something about kissing him feels very right.
“Sorry, it's just I knew if I didn't kiss you, you might give yourself a panic attack from talking so much-” he cuts you off, pulling you back in for another kiss.
This time it is more than very nice. It’s perfect. He has one hand holding your face and one holding your hand. He’s got you.
“I wish I had kissed you sooner.” You say pulling back a little. You rest your head on Hughies shoulder. You feel like a weight has been taken off of you. As if you and Hughie can now have each other's back and you can carry each other's burdens from now on. You feel like you might just fall asleep again.
“You're also really pretty.” Hughie says out of nowhere
“What?”
“Earlier you said the sky was really pretty and I wanted to say you're also really pretty but I didn't so I said it now..”
You chuckle “Thank you, I appreciate it.”
You both stay there on the sidewalk until Hughie finishes his red bull, but he takes his time with it so he can stay beside you for as long as possible.

♫ - Coats, ♫ - Abby, ♫ - Coats & Abby
Oh, goodness, another pairing I need to make a list for! Let me see here ...
Okay, for the two of them, no doubts about it: “If I lose myself” by OneRepublic.
I woke up with the sun Thought of all of the people, places, and things I've loved I woke up just to see With all of the faces, you were the one next to me
Also, “Angel with a Shotgun” by The Cab.
I'm an angel with a shotgun Fighting til' the wars won I don't care if heaven won't take me back I'll throw away my faith, babe, just to keep you safe Don't you know you're everything I have? (I'm an angel with a shotgun) And I, want to live, not just survive, tonight (Live, not just survive)
For Coats: “I Will Be There” by Glass Tiger. He strikes me as a man driven by duty, to protect. I think that’s part of why he and Abby get along so well - that tradition of serving, of protecting.
A fight for king or country Can liven any heart To sleep beneath the open skies A love affair can start Echoes in the valley As embers cross red skiesI'm calling from the mountains Echoes of no replyI will be there Oh, when you call my name I will be there Oh, if you call my name I will be there
For Abby: “I Am A Rock” by Simon and Garfunkel. Unfortunately, because of their family history, both Abby and Ashley have this song as theirs:
I am a rock I am an island I have my books And my poetry to protect me I am shielded in my armor Hiding in my room, safe within my womb I touch no one and no one touches me I am a rock I am an island And a rock feels no pain And an island never cries
